Halloween Origins and Fun Facts: Seasonal Glass & Crystal Ideas

Halloween Origins and Fun Facts: Seasonal Glass & Crystal Ideas

Where Halloween Came From

Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of harvest and the start of the darker half of the year. Celebrated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, Scotland and parts of the UK, Samhain was a time when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin. Bonfires were lit and costumes worn to ward off wandering spirits.

When Christianity spread through Britain, the festival gradually merged with All Hallows' Eve, the night before All Saints' Day on 1 November. Over centuries, the traditions evolved into the trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins and dressing up we recognise today.

A Few Fun Facts

  • Turnips were the original jack-o'-lanterns before pumpkins became popular after the tradition crossed to America.

  • The name Halloween is a shortened version of All Hallows' Evening.

  • Black cats were once thought to be witches in disguise, which is part of why they became a Halloween symbol.

  • Trick-or-treating has links to the medieval practice of souling, where the poor would go door to door offering prayers in exchange for food.

Seasonal Opportunities for Trade Customers

Halloween is not just for costumes and confectionery. It is a strong retail period for engravers, trophy shops and corporate gift suppliers looking to offer something a little different. Our current catalogue includes glass and crystal pieces that lend themselves well to seasonal personalisation, from decorative plaques and paperweights to gift-ready glassware that can be engraved with spooky designs, dates or customer names.

These pieces work equally well for:

  • Halloween-themed retail displays and pop-up promotions

  • Personalised gifts for parties, competitions or staff events

  • Novelty awards for costume contests or seasonal trade events

  • Corporate gifting with a light autumnal or Halloween twist
